The vendor tells us this an original 1966 GT A code car with black pony trim. Unusually fitted with the period optional vinyl roof. Nicely kept and well maintained by its garage owner. Used sparingly in dry weather, the car was fully restored several years ago and still presents beautifully. Kept on the button and ready for Spring driving, GT spec cars in this condition are increasingly harder to find. A sensible reserve means this Mustang is particularly good value for money. The bodywork is finished in deep blue, panelwork appears straight and overall gives the impression of a well kept car, The restoration has mellowed to a really nice patina, creating a car that you would be equally happy to take to car shows or to use regularly. There are several differences as seen on this car for the GT over a standard '66. "GT" emblems are mounted on each of the front fenders and the running horse emblems were deleted. Individual "M U S T A N G" pin letters are located in a stripe that runs along the lower rocker panel. 1966 Mustang GTs came with a "GT" logo gas cap. Rocker panel moldings are excluded. Fog lights are standard as are chrome hood moldings. Black vinyl roof was an option on GTs and its rare to find one with one today.
The interior has the black embossed 'pony' trim and the vinyl holds up well. This car, being a '66 has the deluxe trim option, which includes the faux wooden dashboard. GTs had the 5 gauge consol with different gauges. Acccording to the vendor, everything works as it should. This car has featured in Classic American magazine in the past and is always much admired.
All GTs had 4 barrel carbs and the engine on this GT is purposefully torquey. It starts first time and idles smoothly, see the video below. The engine bay is clean and tidy, and shows that this car has been well cared for. The '66 GT had the option of a 4 speed, which this car has. The cluch is firm yet progressive and the manual gearbox is a world away from a 3 speed auto making this a real drivers car. All GTs were equipped with the special handling package which consisted of stiffer springs, heavy duty shocks, 13/16" front sway bar and a quick ratio steering box. This car has the optional power steering, making for easy maneuverability. Stopping power for the GTs came from discs at the front and drums rear, a great improvement over standard cars all wheel drums. The GTs discs also meant a larger master and slave cylinder.
Spend a few minutes looking through the photographs and you'll find a car with real character. All the right pieces are here and for those in the know, if you are looking for a notchback, the GT is the one to have. The options make all the difference over a stock notchback and the driving experience with the manual box will have you reaching for those McQueen Persol, turtleneck and tweed jacket. (we'd take this GT over a highland green fastback) The reserve is set tantalizingly low for what is essentially alot of car for the money.
